Why Sweep My Chimney? The Hidden Dangers Of An Unswept Chimney

Writer: Joe JohnsonJoe Johnson

Winter is just around the corner, and we're all excited about having a cosy night relaxing in front of the stove. But before striking that first match, have you checked your chimney lately? While it might be hidden, its care is vital. At Sweepia I often get asked, "Why sweep my chimney every year?" With the chill setting in, let's take a look together.

Safety First:

Each fire you light leaves behind residue like soot and creosote. Creosote in particular can catch easily. Essentially, if there's too much of either in your chimney, it can lead to a chimney fire. Even if it doesn't spread and turn into a house fire, it still can weaken the the structure of the chimney and the joints in between the bricks.

Tip: Creosote can take a few forms. One can be a tar like substance. So if you see what looks like black tar running down the stove pipe or chimney, it's a sign of creosote.

Efficiency Of Your Stove:

If there's a lot of soot in your chimney, your stove won't work as well as it should. A clean chimney means the smoke goes out smoothly. Otherwise, soot would build up and start to choke the chimney over time, leaving you with a smoky room and a fire that doesn’t warm your home properly.

Chirping In The Chimney:

During the year, typically between spring and autumn, chimneys can inadvertently become the refuge for birds making nests. Such obstructions, at best, severely reduces the efficiency of your stove. However at worst poses the threat of carbon monoxide coming into the room — a deadly gas undetectable by smell or sight.

Tip: Consider installing a raincap or birdguard; it prevents unwanted guests and debris from entering, while still allowing smoke to evacuate your chimney properly.

Why Sweep My Chimney In A Nutshell

In summary, as winter gets closer, ensuring the peak performance and safety of your fireplace should be top of your home maintenance list.
